Situated near the foothills of the Grand Atlas mountains, Essaouira itself is built on a rocky promontory facing the ocean and the Isle of Mogaodor; surrounded by hills, olive groves, forests and dunes, Essaouira is blessed
with a region of microclimates ideal for the cultivation of cereals, orchards and small-scale vegetable farming of all types which ensure a constant flow of fresh produce for its residents.
Shepherds tend their
flocks in the stony meadows and regularly send into town the fresh white country cheese called 'jubna,' a lovely companion to the ripe avocados and tomatoes one finds in the vegetable market every morning
Local artisans are renowned for their mastery of gold and silversmithing, woodworking and cabinet-making, most notably in the renowned Thuya wood which gives their work a unique luster and beauty. Other local treasures include the oil of the Argan tree (imagine a cross between olive, peanut and cashew oil, with a rich aroma and heady flavor -- the locals mix it with mountain honey and spread it on their toast in the morning), and the stunning selection of fresh Atlantic fish on offer every day at Essaouira's perfectly preserved fortified port. Unsurprisingly, tourism is an expanding presence in our town as people come from all over the world to walk from the ancient medina to the dockyard, there to view the cannoaded walls and the nature preserve of the Isle of Mogador, all of which have been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
